Neck pain and headaches focus of Sept. 30 rehab lecture

Suffering from neck pain or headaches? Make sure to attend Portage Health Rehab’s free lecture on Monday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. The lecture will be at the Houghton rehab office, located on the second floor of the Portage Health University Center clinic.

Neck Pain Square“We will introduce general neck care practices to attendees, and suggest ways an individual can alter their habits to prevent problems from occurring,” said Jeff Collaer, PT, MHSc, MTC. “Our goal is to help you improve your everyday life by living with less pain.”

Participants will also hear about how physical therapy serves as an option to create independent management. The lecture is specifically crafted for people who suffer from acute-to-chronic neck pain or headaches.

Joining Collaer during the presentation will be Mark Kargela, PT, DPT. There will be a short question-and-answer session, and time for free consults by licensed physical therapists.

Attorney General’s community forum on the proposed joint venture information

When: Sept. 23, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Where: Michigan Tech Lakeshore Center, Conference Room 123

What: On August 2, 2013, for-profit LifePoint Hospitals agreed to form a joint venture with Portage Health, in which LifePoint will become an 80 percent owner. The contribution agreement, and other transaction documents may be viewed at Because the Attorney General protects charitable assets under Michigan law, Portage Health and LifePoint Hospitals have made the Attorney General’s review a condition of the transaction.

This community forum will: 1) Provide the public with an overview of the proposed transaction; 2) Outline the Attorney General’s review process; and most importantly, 3) Provide the public an opportunity to comment and ask questions. Representatives of Portage Health and LifePoint Hospitals will attend to listen and respond to public comments.

Portage Health Rehab hosting free lecture on ACL injuries

One of the most painful and assuredly season-ending injuries in all of sports is anything related to the ACL, which is why the Portage Health Rehab staff is hoping to help local athletes learn more about the injury, and how an athlete can help prevent it.

Rehab Lecture - ACLStaff from Portage Health Rehab is hosting a free ACL injury prevention lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. at the rehab office inside of Portage Health University Center.

“This is one of the hardest injuries to rehab from, and can quickly put an athlete on the side lines for six months or more,” said Katie Temple, PT, DPT. “At these lectures we will present the mechanism of the injury, talk about the latest research on ACL injuries and present preventative treatment ideas for athletes.”

Erin Nuttall, ATC, PTA, and Mallory Rojewski, PT, DPT, will join Temple presenting at the lecture. The public is invited to attend this free event, especially athletes and their families.

Following the lecture will be a short question-and-answer session, and time for free consults by Portage Health’s licensed physical therapists.

Community Flu Clinic to be hosted Sept. 28 at HCH

Don’t let the flu bug get you or your family this flu season, join your local healthcare organizations on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Hancock Central High School and be amongst the first in the area to get the flu shot this year.

Aspirus Keweenaw, Portage Health and the Western U.P. Health Department host the annual Community Flu Shot Clinic. The clinic is a unique opportunity for health partners to work together and with local nursing students and volunteers to test emergency response capabilities. The end result is a clinic that features more than a dozen healthcare professionals providing quick and easy access to the flu shot.

Each flu shot is $25. Curbside service is available to those with limited mobility. Cash, check, Medicare Part B and Michigan Medicaid Card are all acceptable payment methods. The flu shot is recommended for anyone 6 months old or older.

Auxiliary kicking off new year with initial meeting Friday

The Portage Hospital Auxiliary is kicking off a new year of activities with their initial meeting Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. in conference room 1 at Portage Health’s main campus in Hancock.

The auxiliary works in support of Portage Health to meet the healthcare needs of the community by raising funds and providing volunteer services. New members are welcome, those interested should attend a meeting.

The initial meeting is this Friday at 10 a.m., but typical meetings will be on the first Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. from October through May.
