The Portage Health Fitness Center is proud to announce a brand new fitness class to the area: “Oh Baby” Prenatal Fitness.

Fitness Classes“A lot of my clients have questions about what kinds of exercises are safe during pregnancy,” said Emily Kunnen, personal trainer and instructor for this course. “This class will help them stay healthy and fit during pregnancy in a safe atmosphere.”

The courses will include a mix of cardio, strength training, yoga and stretching activities that are all aimed to help women prepare for carrying a baby and recovering once the baby is born.

“All stages of pregnant women will benefit from these classes,” said Kunnen. “Every exercise we do will be made appropriate for every level. There’s always a modification for people if they’re in their first, second or third trimester.”

Kunnen herself is pregnant and is completing a training course specifically designed for prenatal fitness. According to the American Council on Exercise, exercising is beneficial for a pregnant woman.

“Exercise during pregnancy offers many physical and emotional benefits,” the council’s website says. “For example, a good exercise program may help relieve common problems associated with pregnancy, such as excessive weight gain, swelling of your hands and feet, leg cramps, varicose veins, insomnia, fatigue and constipation.”

There are many other benefits, read more from the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, or read an article from the Mayo Clinic on the topic.

The “Oh Baby” Prenatal Fitness Courses will run from 7 to 8 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from Sept. 10 to Nov. 30. Call Kunnen at 483-1530 with any questions and to discuss if this class is right for you.

The Portage Health Fitness Center is offering 10 additional courses this fall ranging from yoga to indoor cycling. Visit portagehealth.org/fitnessclasses for a full schedule.

I am very interested in the Pre Natel fitness class. I was wondering if there is a sign up required and how much cost per class.
Thank you!

Shannon, as of right now we have no group classes focusing on prenatal fitness, however, we have trained staff who can help with prenatal fitness. Please contact Angela Luskin, aluskin@portagehealth.org for more information. Also, check back to our website in a couple months, the group prenatal fitness class could be brought back in a future group fitness season.
