UPHS-Portage Honors Volunteers; Auxiliary Presents Scholarships

May 22, 2015

HANCOCK, Mich. – UP Health System - Portage held its annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Shelden Grill in the Magnuson Franklin Square Inn on May 12, 2015. Volunteers were recognized for service ranging from 500 to 15,000 hours accumulated between 1991 and December 2014. Also recognized were recipients of the Portage Hospital Auxiliary medical-education scholarships.

The hospital’s 105 volunteers put in 14,325 hours of service in 2014. As the names of each of the volunteers were read, they came up to receive a pin indicating the number of hours they've accumulated.

Getting pins for both 14,000 and 15,000 hours of service was Mary Ellen Shane, who said she has been volunteering at the hospital eight years, but isn't the only place she's volunteered. She started volunteering at Children's Hospital in Detroit. The list of volunteers honored over 500 hours since 1991 is listed below.

The Auxiliary Scholarship Committee had 26 applications for scholarships from students in medical programs at post-secondary institutions. The scholarships are funded from revenue raised in the Auxiliary's Lights of Love Christmas tree ornament sales.
